# Swap XMR to BTC

Swap Monero for Bitcoin without an account: enter the amount, paste a Bitcoin address and send XMR from any Monero wallet.

- **Arrival:** ≈ 11–24 min

- **Confirmations:** 5 on Monero

- **Rate:** Floating

- **Fee token after arrival:** BTC

## When this route is the right one

You hold XMR and the other side wants bitcoin: a merchant, a hardware purchase, a person with a bc1… address, or your own cold wallet. Monero is accepted in fewer places than Bitcoin, and this is the usual step when it is not.

The Monero network has no idea what a Bitcoin address is, and a Bitcoin node cannot verify a Monero payment. So the XMR is received on its own chain first — 5 confirmations, about 11–24 minutes — and then a Bitcoin transaction is sent to the address you gave. The second leg is visible to everyone; keep that in mind when you choose the receiving address.

## XMR vs BTC — side by side

| | XMR on Monero | BTC on Bitcoin |
|---|---|---|
| Address format | 4… or 8… (95 characters) | 1…, 3…, bc1… |
| Fee token | XMR | BTC |
| Confirmations we wait for | 5 | 2 |
| Explorer | monerohash.com | blockchain.com |

## What happens, in order

1. Enter the amount and your Bitcoin address Paste an address your Bitcoin wallet shows for receiving: 1…, 3…, bc1q… or bc1p…. The estimate is in BTC.
2. Send XMR to the one-time deposit address The page shows a Monero address (4…) and a QR code. Send from any Monero wallet; no payment ID is required.
3. Monero confirms 5 confirmations, about 11–24 minutes at 2-minute blocks. The BTC amount is fixed when the fifth confirmation arrives.
4. Bitcoin is paid out The status page links the payout on the Bitcoin explorer. Your wallet shows it unconfirmed first, then with 1 confirmation after the next block.

## Before you send — checklist

- The receiving address is a Bitcoin mainnet address. If it starts with bc1p (Taproot), the wallet that created it is recent enough to spend from it.
- If the address belongs to an exchange, its deposit page says Bitcoin — the BTC network itself — and not a BTC token on BNB Smart Chain or another chain.
- The XMR you send is unlocked; anything received within the last 10 blocks cannot be spent yet.
- You used a fresh receiving address if you do not want this payout linked to other bitcoin you hold. Bitcoin addresses are reusable, but every reuse joins the records.
- You saved the status link.

## The two mistakes that cost money on this route

### A BTC deposit address that is not on the Bitcoin network

Exchanges list BTC on several networks, and some wallets show a 'BTC' balance that is a wrapped token on another chain. The payout here is a transaction on the Bitcoin network. An address for wrapped BTC on BNB Smart Chain or Ethereum starts with 0x and will be rejected; a wrong network choice on an exchange page may not be.

### Judging the speed by the Bitcoin side

Most of the wait is Monero: five blocks, each about two minutes. The Bitcoin payout is broadcast soon after the fifth confirmation, but your wallet shows it with 0 confirmations until the next Bitcoin block, which can take anything from seconds to half an hour.

## Other ways to make the same move

| Way | What you need | Where it is slower or dearer |
|---|---|---|
| An exchange that lists XMR | An account, a Monero deposit, a sale into BTC, a withdrawal | A withdrawal fee, two waits, and a trade record held by the exchange |
| An atomic swap | Dedicated software, a counterparty online, time | Hours; the counterparty sets the price and may not be there when you are |
| This swap | Two addresses | A floating rate fixed at the fifth Monero confirmation |

## What is visible on-chain

The deposit leaves a hash on the Monero chain and nothing an outsider can read beyond the block it is in. The payout is ordinary bitcoin: the explorer shows the sending address, your address, the amount and the fee, permanently. Nothing on the Bitcoin chain says where the bitcoin came from, and nothing on the Monero chain says where the XMR went; the only document linking the two is the status page.

## FAQ

How long does it take?

About 11–24 minutes until the BTC is sent, then one Bitcoin block — ten minutes on average — until it shows as confirmed in your wallet.

Which Bitcoin address format should I give?

Whatever your wallet offers for receiving. bc1q… (native SegWit) is the common choice; 1… and 3… work; bc1p… (Taproot) works if your wallet supports it.

Can I send the XMR from an exchange?

Yes, if the exchange lets you withdraw Monero. Paste the deposit address as the withdrawal address; the one-time address needs no payment ID.

Will the bitcoin arrive in one piece?

Yes, as a single transaction to the address you gave. The network fee of that transaction is already reflected in the estimate.

What is the minimum?

The form shows it under the amount field. It follows the Monero fee and the Bitcoin fee market and is higher on a congested Bitcoin day.

What if the swap cannot be completed?

Write to support with the swap ID from the status page. The form has no refund address: a swap that cannot be completed is handled by hand, and a return to the address you sent from is arranged under the partner's rules, less the network fee.
