# Swap TAO to USDT ERC-20

Swap Bittensor TAO for USDT on Ethereum without an account: enter the amount, paste your 0x… address and send TAO from your coldkey.

- **Arrival:** ≈ 3–8 min

- **Confirmations:** 10 on Bittensor

- **Rate:** Floating

- **Fee token after arrival:** ETH

## When this route is the right one

You hold TAO — mined, earned from a subnet, unstaked, or bought — and want dollars on Ethereum: an ERC-20 balance at a 0x… address for an exchange deposit, a DeFi position, or a payment to someone who asks for USDT on Ethereum.

Bittensor's chain and Ethereum are unrelated. The TAO goes to a one-time Bittensor address, is counted after 10 confirmations — about 3–8 minutes with processing — and USDT is transferred on Ethereum as an ERC-20 token to the address you gave.

## TAO vs USDT ERC-20 — side by side

| | TAO on Bittensor | USDT on Ethereum ERC-20 |
|---|---|---|
| Address format | 5… (48 characters) | 0x… (42 characters) |
| Fee token | TAO | ETH |
| Confirmations we wait for | 10 | 15 |
| Explorer | x.taostats.io | etherscan.io |

## What happens, in order

1. Enter the TAO amount and your Ethereum address Paste a 42-character 0x… address. The estimate is in USDT and moves with the TAO price until the deposit confirms.
2. Send TAO from your coldkey You get a one-time Bittensor address — SS58, 48 characters, starting with 5. Send the exact amount from your coldkey with your wallet or btcli; a hotkey is not where your funds are held.
3. Bittensor confirms We wait for 10 confirmations. The USDT amount is fixed then.
4. USDT is paid out on Ethereum The status page links your extrinsic on Taostats and the Etherscan transaction that credits your 0x… address.

## Before you send — checklist

- The receiving address is an Ethereum address, 0x… and 42 characters, and if it belongs to an exchange its deposit page says USDT on Ethereum (ERC-20).
- You are sending TAO on the Bittensor network. If an exchange offers TAO withdrawals on more than one network, choose Bittensor.
- The transfer comes from a coldkey. Staked TAO is not free balance; unstake it to the coldkey first.
- The Ethereum wallet will hold a little ETH before you move the USDT on — every ERC-20 transfer pays gas in ETH.
- You saved the status link.

## The two mistakes that cost money on this route

### Trying to send from a hotkey, or from stake

Bittensor's docs say the coldkey holds funds and signs transfers; the hotkey is an operational key for subnets. Stake sits with a hotkey and must be unstaked to the coldkey before it can move. If the balance you see is stake, unstake first, wait for it to show as free balance on the coldkey, then send to the deposit address.

### Arriving with no ETH

The USDT will be in the wallet and visible on Etherscan, but every transfer out of it pays Ethereum gas in ETH. A wallet that holds only USDT cannot send it. Top up ETH before you plan the next move.

## Other ways to make the same move

| Way | What you need | Where it is slower or dearer |
|---|---|---|
| An exchange that lists TAO | An account, a TAO deposit with the exchange's confirmation count, a sale, an ERC-20 withdrawal | Two waits and a withdrawal fee; Ethereum withdrawal fees on exchanges are fixed and often high |
| A wrapped-TAO token on Ethereum and a DEX | A bridge or custodian that issues the wrapped token, gas in ETH, a DEX trade | You hold a token someone else issues until you trade it; two or three transactions |
| This swap | Two addresses | A floating rate fixed at the tenth Bittensor confirmation |

## What is visible on-chain

Taostats shows your transfer as an extrinsic: the sending coldkey, the deposit address, the amount in TAO and the block. Etherscan shows an ERC-20 Transfer event of USDT from a payout address to your 0x… address with the amount and the block. Both records are public and permanent; neither chain stores a link to the other.

## FAQ

How long does it take?

About 3–8 minutes: 10 Bittensor confirmations plus processing. The Ethereum payout follows and is visible on Etherscan as soon as it is in a block.

Which address do I send from — coldkey or hotkey?

The coldkey. Bittensor's docs state that the coldkey holds funds and signs transfers, and advise always sending TAO to a coldkey address, since a transfer to a hotkey can strand the funds (bittensor.com/docs, checked on 12 October 2026). The same applies to the refund address: give a coldkey.

What does the deposit address look like?

An SS58 address of 48 characters starting with 5, the format Bittensor uses for public keys (learnbittensor.org, checked on 12 October 2026). Paste it into the destination field of your wallet or into the btcli transfer command.

What is the minimum?

It is shown under the amount field and follows the TAO price and the Ethereum gas price; on a congested Ethereum day it is higher.

Do I need ETH to receive USDT?

Not to receive it. You need ETH to send it on; that is your wallet's cost and separate from the swap.

What if the swap cannot be completed?

Write to support with the swap ID from the status page. The form has no refund address: a swap that cannot be completed is handled by hand, and a return to the address you sent from is arranged under the partner's rules, less the network fee.
