# Swap BTC to XRP

Swap Bitcoin for XRP without an account: enter the amount, paste your r… address — and the destination tag if your service shows one — and send BTC from any wallet.

- **Arrival:** ≈ 21–44 min

- **Confirmations:** 2 on Bitcoin

- **Rate:** Floating

- **Fee token after arrival:** XRP

## When this route is the right one

You hold bitcoin and need XRP: to fund an exchange account that gives you an r… address with a destination tag, to pay someone on the XRP Ledger, or to hold a coin that settles in seconds rather than in ten-minute blocks.

Bitcoin and the XRP Ledger are separate systems. The BTC goes to a one-time Bitcoin address and is counted after 2 confirmations — plan for 21–44 minutes, nearly all of it Bitcoin block time. The XRP payment then goes to a ledger that closes about every 3–5 seconds (xrpl.org, checked on 12 October 2026), so the XRP side is over almost at once.

## BTC vs XRP — side by side

| | BTC on Bitcoin | XRP on XRP Ledger |
|---|---|---|
| Address format | 1…, 3…, bc1… | r… + destination tag |
| Fee token | BTC | XRP |
| Confirmations we wait for | 2 | 2 |
| Explorer | blockchain.com | bithomp.com |

## What happens, in order

1. Enter the BTC amount and your XRP address Paste the r… address (25–35 characters). If the receiving service shows a destination tag, enter it in the tag field exactly as shown; a personal wallet usually needs none.
2. Send bitcoin to the deposit address You get a one-time Bitcoin address. Send the exact amount from any wallet with a fee that confirms within the next few blocks.
3. Bitcoin confirms We wait for 2 confirmations. Blocks average ten minutes but vary; the XRP amount is fixed at the second confirmation.
4. XRP is paid out The status page links your deposit on the Bitcoin explorer and the XRP payment on Bithomp, including the tag that was used.

## Before you send — checklist

- The receiving address starts with r and is 25–35 characters long.
- If the address is an exchange deposit address, you copied its destination tag as well. Tags are numbers, not words.
- If the address is a brand-new wallet that has never held XRP, the amount is above the base reserve — 1 XRP at the time of checking (xrpl.org, 12 October 2026) — or the ledger will not create the account.
- You send one Bitcoin transaction for the full amount.
- You saved the status link.

## The two mistakes that cost money on this route

### Leaving out the destination tag

Exchanges give every customer the same r… address and tell them apart by the tag, which the ledger carries as a 32-bit unsigned integer. A payment without the right tag reaches the exchange's address but not your account, and getting it credited means a support ticket on their side. Copy the tag from the deposit page into the tag field before you start.

### Sending a small amount to a fresh wallet

An XRP Ledger account does not exist until it is funded with at least the base reserve, which then stays locked in the account. A first payment below it is rejected. If the receiving wallet is new, keep the estimate comfortably above the reserve.

## Other ways to make the same move

| Way | What you need | Where it is slower or dearer |
|---|---|---|
| An exchange account | An account, a BTC deposit with the exchange's confirmation count, a trade, an XRP withdrawal with your tag | Two waits and a withdrawal fee; the tag has to be right on the way out as well |
| A broker or payment app | An account there, a card or bank link, their price | Spread set by the app; often a hold on withdrawals for new accounts |
| This swap | Two addresses — plus a tag if your service needs one | A floating rate fixed at the second Bitcoin confirmation |

## What is visible on-chain

Your bitcoin transaction is public and permanent: the explorer shows the outputs you spent, the deposit address, the amount and the fee. On Bithomp the payout appears as a Payment transaction from a payout account to your r… address, with the amount in XRP, the destination tag if one was set, and the ledger index it was validated in. Both records are open to anyone; neither chain records the other.

## FAQ

How long does it take?

About 21–44 minutes: 2 Bitcoin confirmations plus processing. The XRP payment itself is validated within a few ledgers, each closing in roughly 3–5 seconds.

What is a destination tag and when do I need one?

A number that tells a service which customer a payment belongs to. The XRP Ledger carries it as a 32-bit unsigned integer and does nothing else with it (xrpl.org, checked on 12 October 2026). Exchanges and custodial wallets need it; a wallet whose keys you hold does not.

Why must a new XRP wallet receive at least 1 XRP?

Every account must hold a base reserve — 1 XRP when checked on 12 October 2026 — plus 0.2 XRP per object it owns. A payment below the reserve cannot create the account. The figure can change through validator voting; xrpl.org shows the current one.

What is the minimum?

It is shown under the amount field and follows the Bitcoin fee market. If you are paying into a brand-new XRP account, keep the estimate above the reserve as well.

Can I send the bitcoin from an exchange?

Yes, on the Bitcoin network. Set the withdrawal so that the figure on this page is what arrives after the exchange's fee.

What if the swap cannot be completed?

Write to support with the swap ID from the status page. The form has no refund address: a swap that cannot be completed is handled by hand, and a return to the address you sent from is arranged under the partner's rules, less the network fee.
