"SOL to USDT" is not one swap. USDT exists on several networks, each with its own address format, its own fee token and its own habits at exchanges, and the USDT you receive for your SOL will live on exactly one of them. Choosing it is the only real decision on the route; the rest is pasting two addresses. This post gives the decision in the order that works — who receives, then what they will need afterwards — and then covers the Solana side: the address, the base fee and the rent-exempt minimum that decides how much SOL you can actually send. Solana facts were checked at solana.com/docs and against a mainnet RPC node on 12 October 2026.

## The routes that exist

Two routes take SOL and pay USDT directly:

| Route | USDT arrives on | Receiving address | Fee token the receiver needs afterwards | Deposit confirmed after |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| [SOL → USDT TRC-20](https://sablebolt.io/swap/sol/usdt-trc20) | TRON | T…, 34 characters | TRX (or energy from staking or renting TRX) | 1 Solana confirmation, ≈ 2–5 min |
| [SOL → USDT BEP-20](https://sablebolt.io/swap/sol/usdt-bep20) | BNB Smart Chain | 0x…, 42 characters | BNB | 1 Solana confirmation, ≈ 2–5 min |

USDT on Ethereum and USDT on TON are not offered directly from SOL. They can be reached in two swaps: SOL to USDT on TRON first, then [USDT TRC-20 → USDT ERC-20](https://sablebolt.io/swap/usdt-trc20/usdt-erc20) or [USDT TRC-20 → USDT on TON](https://sablebolt.io/swap/usdt-trc20/usdt-ton) from the TRON wallet. Two swaps means two payout fees and two waits, so prefer the direct routes unless the receiver genuinely cannot take TRON or BNB Smart Chain. The reverse, [USDT TRC-20 → SOL](https://sablebolt.io/swap/usdt-trc20/sol) , exists for the trip back; every route involving SOL is listed on the [Solana page](https://sablebolt.io/coin/solana) and every USDT network on the [USDT page](https://sablebolt.io/coin/tether) . Solana needs 1 confirmation and produces blocks well under a second, so the 2–5 minutes is almost all processing.

## Decide by who receives

The network is chosen by the receiving side, not by the sender's preference.

**A person.** Ask for their USDT address and read the first characters. T… is TRON: the TRC-20 route. UQ… or EQ… is TON: the two-step path. 0x… is the ambiguous case — Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain share the format, and the same private key gives the same 0x… address on both — so ask which network their wallet is set to. BNB Smart Chain means the BEP-20 route; Ethereum means the two-step path. Never guess from the address alone; [How to pay someone whose USDT wallet is on a different network](https://sablebolt.io/blog/pay-usdt-to-a-different-network) explains what happens when the guess is wrong.

**An exchange.** Open its USDT deposit page and look at the network selector. The address under "Ethereum" and the one under "BNB Smart Chain" may be identical strings; only the network you selected decides whether a deposit is credited. Select TRON (TRC-20) or BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20), copy the address shown, and paste it into the form. On TON an exchange also shows a memo, which is why the TON route has a "Payment ID" field; TRON and BNB Smart Chain have none.

**Your own wallet.** Then where you will spend the USDT next decides it, through the fee token — the next section. With no plan beyond holding dollars: TRON is where USDT is most widely accepted for payments; BNB Smart Chain was the cheaper of the two for a transfer in the dated snapshot in [USDT network fees compared](https://sablebolt.io/blog/usdt-network-fees-compared) .

## Decide by the fee token the receiver will need

USDT pays no fees for itself on any network. Every transfer out of the receiving wallet is a transaction on that network and burns the network's own coin. Whoever receives the USDT needs a little of that coin, or the USDT is visible and stuck.

| USDT on | Fee token | A fresh wallet needs, before it can send the USDT on | How to get it on this site |
|---|---|---|---|
| TRON | TRX | Some TRX, or energy rented or obtained by staking TRX | [USDT TRC-20 → TRX](https://sablebolt.io/swap/usdt-trc20/trx) ; see [TRON](https://sablebolt.io/coin/tron) |
| BNB Smart Chain | BNB | Some BNB | Selectable in the form; see [BNB](https://sablebolt.io/coin/bnb) |
| Ethereum | ETH | Some ETH | [USDT TRC-20 → ETH](https://sablebolt.io/swap/usdt-trc20/eth) ; see [Ethereum](https://sablebolt.io/coin/ethereum) |
| TON | GRAM | Some GRAM | [USDT TRC-20 → GRAM](https://sablebolt.io/swap/usdt-trc20/gram) ; see [Gram](https://sablebolt.io/coin/gram) |

The row that surprises people is the first: a TRON wallet holding only USDT cannot send it until TRX or energy is there, and the first transfer to an address that has never held USDT costs more energy than later ones. If the receiver is an exchange this is irrelevant — the exchange pays its own fees. If the receiver is a person or your own wallet, check before you send that the wallet holds the fee token, or plan the small extra swap that puts it there.

**Worked example.** You want to pay a freelancer 300 USDT from SOL. They send a 0x… address. You ask; their wallet is set to BNB Smart Chain and already holds some BNB. The route is [SOL → USDT BEP-20](https://sablebolt.io/swap/sol/usdt-bep20) : paste the 0x… address, enter enough SOL for "You get" to read 300 USDT or a little more, send the SOL, and about 2–5 minutes after it confirms the BscScan link on the status page shows the USDT arriving. Had their wallet been new, with no BNB, the USDT would have arrived just the same and sat there until they added BNB.

## The decision table

| Who receives | Address starts with | Choose | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Person, TRON wallet | T… | [SOL → USDT TRC-20](https://sablebolt.io/swap/sol/usdt-trc20) | They need TRX or energy to move it on |
| Person, BNB Smart Chain wallet | 0x… (they confirmed BSC) | [SOL → USDT BEP-20](https://sablebolt.io/swap/sol/usdt-bep20) | They need BNB to move it on |
| Person, Ethereum wallet | 0x… (they confirmed Ethereum) | SOL → USDT TRC-20, then [USDT TRC-20 → USDT ERC-20](https://sablebolt.io/swap/usdt-trc20/usdt-erc20) | Two payout fees; ask if TRON or BSC would do |
| Person, TON wallet | UQ… or EQ… | SOL → USDT TRC-20, then [USDT TRC-20 → USDT on TON](https://sablebolt.io/swap/usdt-trc20/usdt-ton) | They need GRAM to move it on |
| Exchange | Whatever its deposit page shows for the network you selected | The direct route for that network | Select TRON or BSC on the exchange first, then copy |
| Your own wallet, dollars to hold | Your address | Either direct route | TRON if you will pay others in USDT; BSC for the cheaper transfer on the day |
| Your own wallet, no fee token yet | Your address | Either, plus a small swap for TRX or BNB | Or keep the USDT until you have it |

## The Solana side: address, fee, rent

### What a Solana address is

The Solana documentation (solana.com/docs/core/accounts) describes every account as identified by a 32-byte address, which for a wallet is the public key of its Ed25519 keypair. Written in base58, the alphabet that leaves out 0, O, I and l, that key is 32 to 44 characters with no fixed prefix — which is how to recognise one next to a T… or 0x… address. The form's guidance for a Solana address says the same: base58, 32–44 characters.

The deposit address you send *to* is a one-time Solana address created for your swap. Send SOL itself — the native coin — not USDC or any other token in the same wallet; a token sent there does not start the swap.

### The base fee

solana.com/docs/core/fees gives the base fee as 5,000 lamports per signature, half burned and half paid to the validator, with an optional priority fee on top. A lamport is 0.000000001 SOL, so a one-signature transfer costs 0.000005 SOL in base fee. Your wallet pays this when it sends the deposit; it is not part of the swap and is not the network fee on the form, which is the fee for the *payout* on TRON or BNB Smart Chain, quoted in USDT and already subtracted from "You get".

### The rent-exempt minimum, and why "max" is less than your balance

Solana accounts must hold a minimum balance, proportional to the data they store, to stay on chain; the documentation calls such accounts rent-exempt and gives the formula (account size + 128 bytes) × 3,480 lamports per byte-year × 2 years. A wallet is a 0-byte account, so the minimum is small, but not zero. The live figure comes from the network itself: on 12 October 2026 a mainnet RPC node answered getMinimumBalanceForRentExemption(0) with **650,240 lamports** , 0.00065024 SOL — lower than the documentation's formula gives, so use the node's answer, which is the one your wallet uses.

The practical consequence: the SOL you can send is your balance minus the base fee minus, unless you empty the account to exactly zero, the rent-exempt minimum. Wallets apply this rule for you; if the "max" button offers slightly less than your displayed balance, this is why. Enter in the form the amount your wallet will actually send, and read "You get" from that.

**Worked example.** A wallet shows 2.1 SOL and you want it as USDT on TRON. Sending all 2.1 would leave the account at zero, which the wallet allows, but you want to keep the wallet alive; so you subtract the rent-exempt minimum (0.00065024 SOL on 12 October 2026) and the base fee (0.000005 SOL) and send 2.099 SOL, leaving a little over the minimum. You enter 2.099 in [SOL → USDT TRC-20](https://sablebolt.io/swap/sol/usdt-trc20) , paste the T… address, and send that exact amount. The 1,488,440-lamport figure seen elsewhere is the minimum for a 165-byte *token* account (USDC or another SPL token) and does not apply to sending SOL.

## What arrives, and when the other side counts it

The swap waits for your SOL deposit to reach 1 confirmation, fixes the USDT amount, and sends the USDT on the chosen network. "Done" means the payout is broadcast and linked: Tronscan for TRON, BscScan for BNB Smart Chain. An exchange on the receiving side counts its own confirmations before crediting; it is the exchange's rule, not the swap's. The USDT amount is fixed at the Solana confirmation, not when you opened the form; if a particular amount must arrive, aim a little above it — [Floating rate: what changes between the estimate and the payout](https://sablebolt.io/blog/floating-rate-estimate-vs-payout) has the arithmetic.

## Checklist

- You know which network the receiver's address is on: T… is TRON; 0x… you have *asked* about; UQ… or EQ… is TON and needs the two-step path.
- If an exchange is receiving, you selected TRON or BNB Smart Chain on its USDT deposit page and copied the address shown under that selection.
- The receiving wallet holds the fee token — TRX or energy, BNB, ETH or GRAM — or you have planned the small swap that will put it there.
- You are sending SOL, the native coin, from a Solana wallet, in one transaction for the exact amount in the form.
- The amount leaves the rent-exempt minimum and a fee in the wallet, or empties it on purpose.
- The status link is saved.

## FAQ

Can I swap SOL for USDT on Ethereum or TON here?

Not directly. The direct routes pay USDT on TRON and on BNB Smart Chain. Ethereum and TON are reachable in two swaps through USDT on TRON, at the cost of a second payout fee and a second wait.

Which is better, TRC-20 or BEP-20?

Whichever the receiver can use. For an exchange, the network you selected on its deposit page. For a person, the network their wallet is on. For yourself, TRON if you will pay others in USDT, BNB Smart Chain for the cheaper transfer; compare "You get" on both routes for the same SOL amount.

My friend's address starts with 0x. Which route?

Ask them. The same 0x… address exists on Ethereum and on BNB Smart Chain, and only their wallet's network setting tells you which they are looking at. BEP-20 is a direct route; Ethereum is the two-step path.

Do they need anything to receive the USDT?

No. Receiving costs nothing on TRON or BNB Smart Chain. Sending it on does: TRX or energy on TRON, BNB on BNB Smart Chain. A wallet with USDT and none of the fee token can hold but not move.

How much SOL can I send from my wallet?

Your balance minus the base fee (5,000 lamports per signature) minus the rent-exempt minimum for a 0-byte account (650,240 lamports on 12 October 2026 from a mainnet node), unless you empty the account entirely. Your wallet's "max" applies the same rule.

How long does it take?

About 2–5 minutes to the USDT payout being broadcast: 1 Solana confirmation plus processing.
